Beaches in Rio

There are lots of beaches in Rio, in fact Rio has become famous for them. The two most famous beaches are Ipanema and Copacabana. Next to each of the beaches there is a stretch of famous patterned pavement.

Lapa and Santa Teresa

There are two areas in Rio which are famous for art: Santa Teresa and Lapa.
Lapa

There is an old fashioned train, called the "Bonde", which runs from Lapa to Santa Teresa and back again. From the train you can see across the city. It only costs 60 centavos (20p) to ride the train.

Lagoa - Lake


Close to Ipanema beach there is an enormous lake. It is very beautiful because it is surrounded by hills. On top of one of the hills you can see Christ the Redeemer looking over the city.

Art in Rio




These steps, called "Escadaria Selaron" are in Lapa, an artistic region of Rio de Janeiro. The artist took a long time to put small pieces of tile together to creat this effect. Then, when he finished, he started again. So that the steps are constantly changing.

Rio De Janeiro


Rio has lots of beaches, and they are very popular with "cariocas" (people from Rio). This photo was taken on Ipanema beach. There are volleyball nets, where people play volleybal or "futvolley" (a cross between football and volleyball).















Rio De Janeiro (pronounced "hio je janeiro") is a huge city with lots of famous landmarks. For example: Copacabana beach, the statue of Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf mountain.
There are some artistic areas of Rio: Lapa and Santa Teresa.
